This morning, two people were observed by councillors trimming overhanging trees on Finney Lane next to the railway bridge. They were using a metal ladder and long-handled shears, at one point standing directly on the bridge near overhead electric cables.
Please do not attempt work like this. If you want to help maintain local green spaces, join an established volunteer group such as the Heald Green Team. Doing unapproved DIY maintenance is dangerous for several key reasons.
Severe Risk to Public Safety:
Unsecured ladders and tools next to a busy road put pedestrians and drivers at immediate risk. Professional crews use lane closures and safety barriers for good reason.
Railway & Overhead Cable Hazards:
Works near railway tracks are strictly prohibited and require Network Rail permission due to high-voltage lines. Dropping metal equipment onto overhead cables could cause a major incident. Standing on a bridge wall above live tracks is extremely dangerous and a matter which Network Rail would report to the police because of the risk. This is a major route, this risks key sections of the network.
Proper Authorisation:
Official volunteer groups operate with approved risk assessments, safety training, and council insurance. Even organised groups like the Heald Green Team cannot work on land owned by third parties like Network Rail.
Please prioritise safety and leave high-risk work like this to the relevant authorities.
