Current Status: An online public consultation finished on 21st December 2025. Council officers will now take a few months to analyse all of the submissions. A second consultation will take place in summer 2026. We will advertise this when we have more information.
What is the Stockport Local Plan?
Stockport Council is currently preparing the Stockport Local Plan, a statutory document that must be submitted to the Planning Inspectorate by December 2026. Once adopted, this plan will serve as the primary framework for all planning decisions across the borough for the next two decades.
What the plan determines
This plan dictates the long-term use of land in our community by setting specific housing targets that define exactly how many homes will be built and where. It also focuses on land allocation, identifying sites with a high probability of development through 2042, and makes critical Green Belt protection decisions regarding any necessary boundary adjustments.
Why Heald Green?
Planning officers prioritise sites based on viability, and Heald Green remains a focal point due to two key strategic factors. First is the area’s topography, which offers the level, buildable terrain that developers prefer. Second is our infrastructure, characterised by immediate proximity to major transport hubs including rail networks, motorways, and Manchester Airport. After years of draft revisions, this version represents the final strategic vision likely to be adopted into law.

Major victory: Village Hall Field saved
For the last ten years we have been fighting against landowners (of our greenbelt land) who actively want to sell their land for development and especially against the inclusion of our village hall field to access it. The Village Hall Field has now been excluded from all development allocations. This land is a vital community asset, and we have successfully protected it from being used as an access point for developers.
